Outdoor Channel Letters for Storefronts: Materials, IP & Mounting

What to specify for outdoor illuminated channel letters — materials, weatherproofing, IP, mounting and maintenance.

Published November 5, 2026

Outdoor channel letters face weather every day, so material and sealing decide how long they look good. The build is straightforward when you specify the right front, backing and mount for exposure. Here is the spec guide.

Materials and protection

ElementRecommendation
FaceAcrylic or polycarbonate, UV-stable
BodyAluminium, corrosion-resistant
SealingGasketed, moisture-resistant
MountStandoffs or raceway, secured

Exposure notes

Match the face material to sun exposure (UV-stable acrylic resists yellowing) and secure the mount against wind. Low-voltage LED keeps the install safe.

Maintenance

LED letters need little service; occasional cleaning and a check of the driver enclosure keep them lit for years.
